WINTER TIRE FAQs

Do I need winter tires?

Yes. Winter in Prince Edward Island approaches quickly. In the winter of 2018/2019, the first significant snowfall in western PEI occurred on October 25th.

October.

Of course, snow isn’t the only reason to swap out your all-seasons for winter tires. Cold temperatures degrade the available grip on your all-season tires as soon as the thermometer reads below 7°C. Grip decreases even more below freezing, and the hard rubber compound begins to decrease more significantly below -10°C, even if there’s no snow on the road. The soft rubber compound of a winter tire means you’ll get more wear out of your tires, as well.

When should I put my winter tires on?

With average low temperatures in November falling below freezing before the end of the month, snow possible at the beginning of November or even earlier, and tire shops becoming increasingly busy once the first flurries fly, we advise getting your winter tires on your vehicle before November.

Do I need winter tires with all-wheel drive?

Yes. AWD is a remarkably useful piece of technology. But the drive part of all-wheel drive relates to powering your wheels forward – it doesn’t relate to braking or turning. Winter tires dramatically reduce stopping distances for AWD vehicles compared to the very same vehicles with all-season tires, as shown in this Consumer Reports test

How do winter tires work?

Winter tires function well for two primary reasons: a softer compound and a unique tread pattern. The deeper cut tread pattern is designed to expel slush and snow, and thousands of sipes actively bite into slippery surfaces. All-season tires are designed for long-term wear on dry, warm pavement, but an all-season tire’s mission in winter is disrupted by temperatures that harden the rubber compound and by tread that doesn’t have the required depth to dissipate snow and slush.

Do I need four winter tires?

Yes. Think of your tires like shoes. They are, after all, your vehicle’s only contact point with the road, just as your shoes are your only contact patch with the sidewalk. How comfortable are you walking in one high-heeled shoe and one sneaker? Do you find it’s easy to walk through mud-bottomed puddles with one rubber boot and one sandal? Of course not. Your vehicle’s stability requires that all four tires be the same variety. A vehicle with a ‘split personality’ is prone to lose traction at one end or the other, and a vehicle that’s already losing control at one end won’t easily be able to reacquire traction with only two winter tires.
