How Far Can The 2022 Honda Civic Go On $5.00 Of Gas? We Ran It Dry To Find Out

Let's face it: the cost of living increases we've all encountered over the last year have been downright frightening. And even though the price of fuel isn't as high as it was – hitting a PEI record of $2.189 in June – we're still paying around 40% more than we were at the low-point from the last year.

What's a driver to do? From public transportation to alternative powerplants to simply driving less, there are options. But perhaps the best option is to simply stick with the tried-and-true. The Honda Civic has been Canada's best-selling car in 24 consecutive years. Now in its 11th generation, the Civic is a spectacular blend of performance, style, comfort, safety, technology, space, dependability, and efficiency.

Officially, Natural Resources Canada's Office of Energy Efficiency rates the 2022 Honda Civic at 7.7 L/100km in city driving and 6.0 L/100km in highway driving. In other words, at PEI's current fuel prices of $1.819, 100 kilometres of mixed city/highway driving (6.9 L/100km) will cost $12.55 in the Civic. But is that the best the Civic can do?

In fact, we know that on the Prince Edward Island's fairly level terrain and lower max. speed limits, the Civic often outperforms its official government fuel test ratings. So, we decided to put it to the test.

Last week, we took a 2022 Honda Civic Sport with not a drop of gas in it and added precisely $5.00 of fuel: 2.6 litres of fuel. Our Marketing & Events Manager, Kelly Dowling, and our Social Media Administrator, Wendy Gallant, then drove toward Tyne Valley for lunch at Backwoods Burger.

Did they make it?

Most definitely. Based on the Civic's 6.0 L/100km rating, 2.6 litres of fuel should have allowed Kelly and Wendy to drive 43 kilometres in the Civic: 33 kilometres to Tyne Valley and 10 kilometres back toward Summerside before running out of fuel in Grand River. Instead, Kelly and Wendy made it as far as Slemon Park averaging an astonishing 4.5 L/100km.
