2021 Honda Odyssey Is The Safest Minivan On The Market According To IIHS

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's crash test ratings are the most difficult in the automotive industry. The IIHS is an independent non-goverment organization that, year after year, increases the difficulty of its crash tests.

Put simply, this is the global standard.

The best vehicles earn a Top Safety Pick award from the IIHS. That means they've earned GOOD ratings in the following crash tests: driver-side, passenger-side small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength, and head restraints. To become a Top Safety Pick, the vehicle must also have either an ADVANCED or SUPERIOR rating for front crash prevention plus an ACCEPTABLE or GOOD rating for headlights.

But wait a second. The very best vehicles earn a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the IIHS. That means the ACCEPTABLE or GOOD headlight ratings must apply to all vehicles in the range across all trim levels, not just the most expensive model.

There is only one minivan with a Top Safety Pick+ rating.

It's the new 2021 Honda Odyssey. This is the safest minivan you can buy. Don't take our word for it. Don't take Honda's word for it. Believe the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, and believe the National Highway Safety Traffic Administration, which gives the eight-passenger Odyssey its best 5-star overall vehicle score.

We're also not surprised to discover that the Odyssey received top marks for its LATCH child seat attachments. It is so easy to install a child seat in the Odyssey and so easy to reconfigure the cabin, regardless of child seat placement, thanks to the Magic Slide second row.

Every Odyssey also comes standard with Honda Sensing technology. Honda Sensing includes:

  • • collision mitigation braking system with pedestrian detection
  • • forward collision warning
  • • road departure mitigation incorporating lane departure warning
  • • lane keeping assist system
  • • adaptive cruise control
