24 Years In A Row – Honda Civic Captures Canada's Best-Selling Car Crown In 2021
January 10 2022, Centennial Honda
2021 was the 24th consecutive year in which the Honda Civic earned the title of Canada's best-selling car. A streak that began in 1998 has now outlasted three prime ministers, three PEI premiers, and four U.S. presidents.
The Honda Civic became Canada's best-selling car in the middle of the sixth-generation model's tenure, 10 years after Honda began building Civics in Canada. Another decade later, in 2008, Honda Canada set a record for Civic sales despite the onset of a global recession.
By the end of 2021, despite all of the limitations brought on by the pandemic and a supply chain crisis that brought inventory down to near nonexistent levels, Honda sold 43,556 Civics in Canada over a 12-month period.
"Almost everyone has a Civic story to tell," Honda Canada's Assistant Vice President Steve Hui says. "As a vehicle that appeals to a wide variety of lifestyles, from those looking for their first car, as a people mover and grocery getter for growing families, to tuner and automotive enthusiasts, the Civic is a safe, affordable, fun and reliable car that caters to many needs."
Now sold as an 11th-generation car that was introduced last summer, the 2022 Honda Civic is objectively the best-ever Civic in every way. It's a better performer. It's more spacious, safer, and better equipped. It's also an astonishing value.
Even with all of that more – whether it's more horsepower or more technology or more spacious – the Civic actually costs less now than it did when Honda first nabbed the best-selling car title in 1998. (And no, the 1998 Honda Civic didn't offer – let alone come standard with – lane keeping assist or remote start or heated seats or Apple Car Play.)
According to the Bank of Canada's inflation calculator, the 1998 Honda Civic LX sedan's $15,700 price now equals $24,715, $250 more than the 2022 Honda Civic LX.
