2025 Honda Hybrids: How Much Fuel Can you Save With the Civic, CR-V, And Accord Hybrids?
January 24 2025, Centennial Honda
Honda's hybrid lineup is expanding with the return of an icon in late 2025. The 2026 Honda Prelude brings back one of the most famous Hondas of all time after a 25-year hiatus.
The Prelude ran through five generations between 1978 and 2001 and generated over 800,000 sales in the U.S. alone. North of the border, we're huge lovers of the Prelude – that's why we park two of them inside our showroom, one each from the first and fifth generations.
The new Prelude, of course, will feature a hybrid powertrain in keeping with Honda's strategy to equip core models with ICE/battery-connected powerplants. Honda's been selling hybrids in North America for 25 years, and 2024 was the best year yet for Honda hybrid sales in Canada.
30% of the Hondas sold in Canada in 2024 were hybrids. More than half of the Accords and CR-Vs are hybrids and it's believed that Honda is zooming toward 60% of Civic sales stemming from the hybrid part of the lineup.
What's the benefit to the consumer? Well, it's not just fuel economy, although that's the major component.
The CR-V, Canada's favourite Honda, adds 14 horsepower when you move up from the LX and Sport (both of which aren't hybrids) to the EX-L Hybrid and Touring Hybrid. Torque figures jump by 38%.
The Accord, which is available in one gas-fired trim level and two hybrid trim levels, adds 12 horsepower and 55 lb-ft of torque in the Sport and Touring hybrid models.
The Civic, Canada's best-selling car in 2024, is available as a sedan as either an LX or Sport (with a conventional 2.0-liter four-cylinder) or as a Sport Hybrid or Sport Touring Hybrid. The Hybrid produces 200 horsepower – an extra 50 ponies – and 232 lb-ft of torque, an upgrade of 99 lb-ft.
Fuel, of course, is the big question. We've based our math on gas costs of $1.75/litre and annual mileage of 20,000 kilometres. Sometimes we pay less for gas; sometimes we pay more. Some drivers travel less; some drivers travel more.
We've also based our math on the combined fuel economy rating, not the city or highway ratings. If a lot of your driving is in town, a hybrid's fuel cost savings will be even more dramatic.
2025 HONDA | CITY L/100km |
HIGHWAY |
COMBINED |
FUEL COSTS FOR 20,000 KMs @ $1.75/litre |
Civic LX | 7.3 | 5.7 | 6.6 | $2,310 |
Civic Sport | 7.5 | 6.0 | 6.8 | $2,380 |
Civic Hybrid | 4.7 | 5.1 | 4.8 | $1,680 |
Accord | 8.1 | 6.4 | 7.3 | $2,555 |
Accord Hybrid | 5.0 | 5.7 | 5.3 | $1,855 |
CR-V AWD | 9.1 | 7.6 | 8.4 | $2,940 |
CR-V Hybrid AWD | 6.0 | 6.9 | 6.4 | $2,240 |
The math suggests that no matter which hybrid model you choose, the upgrade is likely to save around $700 per year, or roughly $60 per month.
More power, more savings, more Honda.
